Tomatoes

Why we love them

Tomatoes just taste like summer. They come in so many colours and sizes, it’s impossible to get bored with them. They’re so versatile, and a perfect addition to summer preserving.

Garden tip

A properly pruned and suckered tomato plant produces a better fruit yield. Ask us to show you how!

Nutrition fact

Tomatoes, especially cooked ones, contain lycopene, which is a strong antioxidant. Bust out the homemade tomato sauce!

Garlic

Why we love it

Local garlic is expensive to purchase, but there’s a reason why: locally grown garlic is much spicier and has way more flavour than the regular white garlic from the store. You use less, and taste it more. Growing garlic for us is a no-brainer.

Garden tip

Garlic is the perfect plant to start growing food with. You can pack a lot into a small space, and it’s very hands off; plant it in October and forget about it until the scapes are ready to harvest!

Nutrition fact

Garlic contains a strong antimicrobial and antioxidant compound called allicin, that is activated through chopping, and increases in levels with oxidation. What does that mean? Chop your garlic first and let it sit to the side while cooking to increase its nutritional value!

Greens

Why we love them

Greens can be grown all year round. There are unlimited varieties to try, and they give you the biggest bang for your buck out of the garden. We can make your own spring mix to suit your tastes: spicy & peppery, bold & bitter, colourful & mild, take your pick.

Garden tip

These are the best choice for your slightly shaded growing space. Certain greens are more suited to warmer weather, where some varieties will bolt and go to seed. Check your seed varieties and try investing in some shade cloth to help boost your greens yield!

Nutrition fact

Many greens contain bitter compounds (even romaine lettuce- it doesn’t have to be extremely bitter for the benefits!) which get your digestive juices moving to help you digest fats and protein more efficiently. Starting your meal with a salad and a vinegar based dressing will help prepare your body for digesting your dinner, and help reduce blood sugar spikes. A win-win!

Peas

Why we love them

Another big taste of spring, we love the fresh crunch of sugar snap peas, using snow peas in a stir fry, and freezing shelling peas to use throughout the winter.

Garden tip

Peas are nitrogen fixers – an important nutrient in soil. This means that they capture nitrogen with their roots, and make it available for other plants to use. Plant peas and legumes in a garden heavy with greens and your plants will thank you for it!

Nutrition fact

Peas are high in both protein and fiber which help reduce blood sugar spikes. A satisfying, blood glucose stabilizing snack!

Peppers

Why we love them

Sweet or spicy; long or stout; large or mini, and in almost all the colours of the rainbow – what’s not to love? We plant an assortment based on what we want to make in the kitchen, as peppers are so versatile. Eat them raw; roast them for sauces or hummus; stuff them and bake them; candy the spicy ones as condiments – you name it, and we’ve done it. They’re also a real show-stopper in the veggie garden, and people are always impressed when you show them your pepper plants.

Garden tip

If you’re starting these from seed at home, you want to start them earlier than you would think – mid-February is ideal. Peppers also like a lot of heat, so put these in your greenhouse, in a garden bed against a south facing wall, or under a polydome for best results.

Nutrition fact

Peppers are high in vitamin C and other antioxidants like capsanthin and quercetin – red bell peppers especially. Quercetin is also something called a mast cell stabilizer, which is just a sciency way of saying that it is helpful in stabilizing histamines, or seasonal allergy responses! Eat up, and your body (and tastebuds) will be grateful.

Asparagus

Why we love them

Asparagus is a labour of love and a large commitment but plant a patch of asparagus and it will grow for upwards of 30 years! Nothing says spring like your first sprigs of asparagus.

Garden tip

To establish a solid root system, it takes around 3 years before you can harvest asparagus after planting. If you plant from crowns instead of seeds, you might be able to shave off a year, if you’re lucky!

Nutrition fact

Asparagus contains high amounts of inulin, which is referred to as a ‘prebiotic’; a type of carbohydrate that feeds the good bacteria in your gut. A tasty, AND gut supportive veggie.
